The Preciousness of Time

Posted by Steve Choi on

Time is our greatest commodity that we often waste.  Think about it, we can’t buy any more of it.  Time can’t be paused.  It can’t be saved.  Time just keeps going.   Jonathan Edwards once preached a sermon titled, “The Preciousness Of Time And The Importance Of Redeeming It.”   In it, he reminded his congregation, in 1734,  that unplanned time goes to idleness.  How many of us have wasted hours on social media each day?  Edwards also reminds us how the devil lies to us regarding time.

“The devil makes fools of them; for when they are young, he tells them, there is time enough hereafter, there is no need of being in haste, it will be better seeking salvation hereafter; and then they believe him. Afterwards, when their youth is past, he tells them, that now they have lost so much, and the best of their time, that it is not worth their while to attempt to do anything; and now they believe him too.”

We must value our time.  Here are some practical ways we can spend this summer well.

  1. Start today.  Manage your time now.  Wake up everyday with a plan.
  2. Make worship a priority.  Put this into your calendars and be fully there.
  3. Live by the principle of putting first things first. Could I suggest this order:  God, family, health, work?
  4. Learn to rest well.  Use leisure and rest so you can fully live for God.
  5. Read.  We have the gift of books.  There is so much wisdom out available and yet we neglect it without a second thought.  Think of what you can learn.
